God Became a Servant

My Biography of God – Week 4
Philippians 2:1-23

Who wants to be a servant? Where does that land on your ladder of success? Can you imagine being the CEO of a top company, yet choosing to work as the janitor for that company – with janitor pay and all? What Christ did for us is more than a prince-and-pauper fairytale – it is a real example of true servanthood. Let’s see what we can learn from true humility as exemplified by God himself.

Words That Describe God

Many different industries use words that describe their products. Few companies spend more time describing their products than car companies. When you see an advertisement for a car, the words used to describe it can tell you far more than the actual name of the car can. Words like refined, rugged, exhilarating, and limited edition give a picture and expectation of what that car is like. What is God like? All too often, the word God does not mean as much as it should, because we don’t know much about the person and character of God. As you read God’s Word, you will find words that describe Him, or you will be able to summarize a verse with a word that describes the way He is or what He does. When filling out this section, take time to record the word and the verse where you found the word.

Concluding thoughts for Week 4

Jesus gives an intense example of what it means to esteem others better than yourself. It is an incredible thought that everyone else is more important than I am. That  alone can be a depressing thought until I realize that to everyone else, I am more important than they are. As I take care of others, they take care of me. Even if others do not fulfill their responsibility, God will take care of me. So, my wife is more important than I am, my youth group is more important than I am, my church people are more important than I am, the people at the grocery store are more important than I am, the people reading this are more important than I am, and the people that don’t read this are more important than I am.

How can I then practically esteem others better than myself? I have some thoughts, but I would like to hear yours in the comments!
